DR PHIL O’BRIEN

Phil O’Brien is Senior Lecturer in Real Estate and Housing Economics at the University of Glasgow. He is an academic researcher specialising in the real estate development process for housing and its relationship with urban planning.
His principle interests are in the economic effects of planning interventions and how these impact upon land and housing development. This is reflected substantively in comparative investigations of alternative national planning systems, research into land value capture and resilience in the housing system.
He has worked on projects for funders including Horizon Europe and the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, and contributed to research that underpinned the Scottish Government’s commitment to funding of affordable housing.
Prior to joining the University of Glasgow Phil was in the Department of Geography and Planning at the University of Liverpool, having earlier been awarded his PhD at the same institution.
